With so many materials to sort through, Wanda hadn’t nearly enough time to check each one individually to identify the flora and proper uses for it. However, she’d noticed through her time harvesting and brewing that plants with similar properties possessed hints of those abilities within their scent. Meaning Wanda didn’t actually need to know what each plant was, only whether or not it could be useful in a healing potion.

To that end, she sorted her first chunk of the pile into three sections: ingredients with healing properties, ingredients with stabilization properties, and the rest. Wanda almost considered making mana-restorative potions as well, but ultimately decided it would be more efficient to focus on a single creation. And of the two, a healing potion was typically far more vital.

As she sifted through the various plants, Wanda was struck all over again by how poorly they’d been handled. Within the halls of the Alchemist Union, Wanda would have expected every ingredient to receive the care it deserved. When she next glanced at the battered equipment filling the dusty room, Wanda had a thought that she believed explained it all.

Of course they wouldn’t waste the best ingredients or supplies on Apprentice Alchemists, not during an emergency. This wasn’t about education, it was a matter of saving lives, and that meant putting the best materials into the hands that could make the most use of them. More experienced alchemists would be able to craft a far wider array of brews, and even their healing potions would be of higher Grades.

Looking at the situation from that perspective, Wanda had no issues with her subpar materials. She would contribute the most she could with what had been provided, it was quite literally all she could do. Her efforts would be important, but only one small part of a much greater whole. Still, Wanda fully intended to see her role done well. Maybe her potions would only matter to one person when the day was done.

But even if so, Wanda had no intention of letting that lone induvial down.

After several minutes of rapid sniffing, Wanda had carved another section of the massive pile off into her three established mounds. Before she started to prepare them, the young wizard darted around the desks with Wumble at her side, searching for the least busted one. All of them had some sort of unevenness or wobble, but Wanda discovered a station at the far end with just one of the corners burned off.

In her hurry, Wanda didn’t bother to cast the modified version of her Potion Containment Spell, the one that wasn’t bothersomely bright to other alchemists. She rather liked the hue of her natural spell anyway, and with no one else around, it shouldn’t matter. Beside which, Wanda was already on the move, grabbing a handful of plants from two of the mounds and bringing them over.

Several fell from her arms as she made her trek, which Wumble helpfully picked up and carried along. Upon reaching the station,
